WebView2 is a control platform developed by Microsoft that allows developers to embed web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, in their native applications. It uses Microsoft Edge as its rendering engine to display web content in native apps. This means that as a Windows app developer, you will have access to the latest web tech in both existing and new apps.

Why does HTML Executable use WebView2?

HTML Executable offers you to choose between two HTML rendering engines: CEF and WebView2. The main advantage of WebView2 is that it is installed by default on Windows 11 and 10. Thus, HTML Executable can generate smaller application files, since dependencies such as WebView2 are already installed on the end user’s computer and they do not have to be shipped inside the application.

How to Install WebView2

By default, you do not have to install WebView2 manually if you are on Windows 10 or 11. For older Windows versions, you can install WebView2 yourself if it is not already available.

To install WebView2, follow these steps:

1. Click the “Download WebView2” button below. This will redirect you to the official Microsoft download page.
2. On the Microsoft download page, click the download button.
3. Download and run the installer file ‘MicrosoftEdgeWebview2Setup.exe’.
